Steel Brothers #3017

California

4/05

I purchased Graham Taylors' Seven in mid 1979. Chassis number 3014. I was 18 years old and this was my first car. It had a rough life before I bought it as the fibreglass had numerous rough repairs done to it.

I clocked up about 10,000 miles in it before taking it off the road, when I went to university in 1981, for a restoration.

I added various extra tubes to stiffen the chassis and checked it for straightness. As I was studying Mechanical Engineering I decided to complete a design for an independent rear suspension as part of my final year engineering design course.

Over the past 2 years I have begun restoring this car and hope to have it back on the road in a few years time.

When I was doing my design project, Steel Brothers were kind enough to give me a chassis drawing showing some of the details I needed. Steel Brothers had purchased a quantity of 2 litre 907 engines and 5 speed ZF gearboxes. Their intention was to build a 2 litre version of the S4. They completed one car, which I was tempted to buy, but it used a Ford Cortina (I think) front suspension and rear axle. This looked a bit crude to my eyes. They had remodelled the body...somewhere I have a polaroid photo of it.
