- 9th May 1990, David Baxter sold
the car to Robert De Courcy May, The Gate House, Bliss Gate,
Rock, Nr. Kidderminster. DY14 9YE.
The car had been used for circuit
racing and had not been issued with a V5 Registration Document
but the original buff logbook was still with the car. It came
with a dead Ford Cross Flow engine and strange home made wings.
Rob swapped the engine for a rebuilt 1500cc Pre-Cross Flow, fitted
new clam-shell front and Caterham type rear wings and competed
with the car in two or three Midland Hillclimbs during the remainder
of the 1990 season.
Rob then stripped the car and
completely rebuilt it over the next 18 months. The car was built
and modified with the intention of competing in the 1400cc road
going class in the Midland Hillclimb Championship. A very special
1400cc Lotus/Ford Twin Cam engine was built and the car received
an M.O.T. on 21st March 1992. However, a Westfield with a 1400cc
BDA entered the class and so Rob decided to transfer into the
Classic Sports Car class.
The photo (above left) of the
car with clamshell wings is dated Shelsey (Walsh) 06.06.93. This
photo was taken by my wife Vanessa after her Morgan Plus 4 had
broken in practice, I was competing in another Plus 4 with which
I won the Championship that year on handicap from Rob May who
came second. The front-on view is also Shelsley Walsh, possibly
the following year (94)
The shot of the car with cycle
wings (below) was taken at Loton Park Hill Climb sometime in
1997.
Over the next few years the car
was progressively modified and Rob achieved class records at
Loton Park, Shelsley Walsh and Prescott. When some of his records
started to fall to a Elan 26R with a 2 litre Twin Cam, Rob fitted
a 1750cc Twin Cam and regained them all. Current records held
are: Shelsley Walsh 32.63. Prescott 46.09 and Loton Park 57.79.
Current Spec: 1750cc Lotus Twin
Cam with twin 45 DCOE Weber carbs giving 145 BHP at the wheels,
173 BHP at the flywheel, ignition cut-out set at 7500 RPM. Dry
sump lubrication. Aluminium cased Ford three rail Rocket gearbox.
Ford Cortina rear axle with Quaife limited slip diff. 71/2"
alloy wheels with 7.50 x 13in cut slicks. Road weight 490Kg.
I acquired the car 29th November
2003 and would be interested to hear from anyone who knows anything
about its early history.
