1962 S2 SB 1208
Sweden
My car left the factory on June 7, 1962 and was sold to Michael H. Pitty of Keston, Kent. It was delivered as a kit without engine and gearbox, but was prepared for BMC parts upon the insistence of the buyer. Michael's father owned a garage specilizing in Austin's and demanded that Michael's Lotus be fitted with the "correct" type of engine. As far as I know Lotus officially didn't supply sevens with the BMC engine in June of '62 which is probably one of the reasons Michael had to wait a long time before taking delivery of the kit. The car was registered on the 12th of July and received registration number 2 UKL. Engine size was 948 cc and the color of the car was Jaguar Green. A special windscreen was fitted, purchased from Eric Broadly's Lola factory which was "just down the road" in Bromley.

In 1974 Michael decided to sell the car and with the help of his Swedish friend Alf Näslund the car was sold to Göran Carlborg in Sweden. He sold it after about a year and a half to Jonny SvenssonI and then I bought it in 1977. During these 2 years before I purchased the car it had been "restored". It was painted white and the front fenders were replaced with homemade clamshells. The special windscreen was also replaced. What happened to it nobody knows. The fellow that I bought the car from had no record of the car's history.

I used the car in more or less the same condition as purchased until 1985 when I did a major renovation. By this time I had managed to find out about the cars history and had come in contact with Michael. The decision was to more or less put the car back in the condition it had been during the sixties. The car was stripped down to the bare chassis and new aluminum was fitted in the floor and rear of the car. Cycle wings were fitted in front and correct rear wings in the rear. Engine, still 998 cc, was fitted with a hotter cam and a Weber 45. Steel wheels 5" were also mounted. I decided to paint it Brooklands Green. More or less back to the old configuration. And back again on the racetrack.

I ran the car in a class that we here in Sweden call Roadsport. In other words a class for road legal cars. With the 998 cc engine the car ran in class C. I also ran the car in historic events. Still have the FIA Historical Identity Form. In 1992 (30 year celebration) I went with the car to England. Visited Michael who had not seen the car since 1974. When trying to shift gears he found the clutch a bit too stiff and made the remark: "What have you done to my clutch!" After 18 years he still considered it his. We also ran a historic race at Donington against some very tough competition but had a lot of fun.

I soon got tired of historic racing. It is not easy with a seven. I think the FIA still believes that the car is a historical mistake. Decided to keep racing in Roadsport and in order be a little more competitive and to be able to race in class B I fitted a 1275 cc BMC engine that was bored out to 1330 cc. Changed to a ribbed cased gearbox with straight cut gears and fitted a rear axle from a Morris Marina. Also fitted cycle wings that turned with the front wheels. Changed the 5 inch steel rims to 6 inch Minilites.

Finally after a few seasons we managed to win the championship in Roadsport B in 1998.

I have now stopped racing the car. I am running an MG Midget instead, but that is a different story. The old front wings are back on the car again as are the old steel rims. Soon I guess I will probably fix up the old 998 cc engine as well as the old Standard 10 rear axle. Today the car is mostly used for short trips here and there as well as the odd slalom run with the local sports car club. Can't keep an old seven completely away from competing.

I am the keeper of the car register that we have in the Lotus Seven Club of Sweden. So if you need some information about the sevens we have, or have been in Sweden perhaps I can help.
