This vehicle was purchased from
a private party in California in 1974. The owners prior to this
purchase are unknown. Based upon frame modifications and the
caster-camber of the front end, this car was probably raced in
California following purchase.
I first saw this car in 1968/69
at a BMC dealership in Berkley, California, while attending UCB.
At that time the car was fully painted, candy apple red; had
a BMC 948cc engine, Triumph 10 rear-end and Series 2 nose and
fenders. I lost contact with the car unti1 1974. When I relocated
the vehicle (by chance) it was in very poor condition, requiring
restoration.
At the time of the restoration,
I decided to upgrade the nose and fenders to Series 3. The aluminum
was stripped of all paint and returned to its natural state.
The engine was pretty well shot and was replaced by a 1275cc
BMC engine which had been race prepared by Kenny Dulas in 1973
(outside of Boston); this engine was tested and put out 115Hp
at the rear end (single 45 Weber). This engine has no more than
2000 miles on it. The Triumph 10 rear-end was given to a racer
friend of mine) and replaced by a much stronger Ford Escort rear-end.
The steering and suspension were replaced and upgraded. The interior
and seats were redesigned in cloth and leather.
This car has essentially
been garaged since I moved to Atlanta in 1979. It always starts
and runs well. It is a hold over from many years past. Just trying
to sell the car so I can get Alex a car acceptable to his mother!
Have had the car for 19 years so am rather fond of it, but Alex
needs a car for school as I noted previously. Obviously, the
more money the better for him; he will start university next
year.
Actually, I always wanted to convert it to a Lotus 37 (only one
ever made to my knowledge), but never got around to it. |
