I am currently completely restoring
a 1968 S2 . The car was completely in bits and had no rear guards.
The original tyres were 5.20x13 (the old imperial size). I understand
the metric equivelent is 165/80 x 13.
First two pictures are of the
car in 1970 with the first New Zealand owner. Note the rear guards
which arrived in NZ with in 1969 the likes of which I have not
seen anywhere else. 3rd, a picture of the heap of bits I started
with. The rest are the frame under restoration.
I purchased a pair of S2 guards
from Redline Components. They were quite good but not fair enough
for my liking so I have been building up with polyester resin
to get rid of the imperfections.
I fitted 165/80Rx13 to the wheels,
but although the car is not yet on the ground I was sure the
165/80R's would rub on the Redline guards. I checked a 1962 S2
when in the UK recently. The owner, who has had the car since
new. He has cut the rim from the wheel and re-welded it further
in to prevent the 165/70 tyres from rubbing on the inside of
the guard. Even so the tyres are rubbing slightly on the inside
against the body when cornering.
The end result is that I have
replaced my 165/80's with 155/70's and I am pretty confident
they will give a clear fit to the Redline guards, although I
can't be certain until the car is on it's wheels.
Redline offered S2 guards either
6" or 9" wide. I opted for the 9" but they are
actually about 71/2" (190 mm) outside width.
