Mal Hill's Return of the Tank

All bolts have been upgraded to Stainless steel or Titanium and gun-drilled to save weight. New hinges for the bonnet have been made from nylon. The originals are Lotus Europa door hinges and rust badly - New bolts made from gun-drilled Stainless steel.
A homemade bonnet lock fitted - similar operation to original S4 a rear seat catch from a Ford Sierra estate!! The bonnet has been lifted 10mm via the hinges at the front to allow clearance for the Zetec engine. Not noticeable at all.

Roll bar has been left off, it adds weight & would crumple should the car roll over so offers no protection at all. This saves 4.5 kg in weight. @ Only 31mm diameter, I think t looked downright silly & was definitely an afterthought in the design of S4.
The long spare wheel steel mounting bolts have been made from high grade alloy and gun-drilled.

Automatic electric cooling fan, complete with manual overriding switch fitted. New Instruments fitted same as originals. I worked for Smith's Industries awhile ago and so had some stashed away in the attic - I'd made earlier, like 16 years earlier!!
Electric windscreen washers replaced the hopeless period hand pump. Polyurethane bushes have been used throughout the suspension arms & links.

Gun-drilled Titanium gearlever - same design and length as original. Clutch converted to cable operation, now it's operation is as light as a feather!! Oil filter had to be remotely repositioned to clear the steering column shaft, now I don't have to grovel underneath the car to change it - cool !!

New stainless radiator side filler plates. Necessary because the new radiator is significantly larger than the original, over twice the cooling capacity in fact. ultra cool!! Rebuilt the front grill using Stainless steel & Titanium. It looks Identical to original, but now it won't rust!

Work still to be done:-
I'm still searching for new electrical rocker switches, although mine work OK the chrome has been rubbed off the edges of the originals. Some wheeler/dealers might say - 'car has nice patina!' I intend to make new Side-screens which will give me more elbow room, similar to the type fitted to new Caterham's. I may make _ doors, again similar to the current Caterham items. I also intend to make some 'COBRA' style 'Wind Wings.' whether these will stop buffeting remains to be seen. I'm certain that once the car is driven other things will rear their ugly head.
