<r.cheeseman@westdorset-dc.gov.uk> U.K. My seven left factory without engine June '62 - not reg for road until '64!? BNO 979B SB1461 ( by coincidence same No as Dennis Ortenburger's Elite ) I bought her in '74 - very much a student car and fairly 'mature' - in other words extremely well used with a knackered 948 on single HS2 (although the log book records that she once had an XSP engine installed, which I believe was basically formula junior). I used her as my only car regularly clocking up 100+ miles a day. Progressively uprated engine to 1150 (bored 1098) then 1275.....along the way fitted discs and also had 'semi monocoque' transmission tunnel repaired in area of gearbox mount by CTG Racing in Ferndown. Len Terry was working there at that stage. During this time I was working in Salisbury and met Vincent Haydon with his pucker S3 twin cam. Then at about the same time as buying a derelict cottage the rear radius arm pulled out - one of the known weak points with the S2!! So she was literally put in a barn for about 12 years. After building a decent garage I rebuilt her in time to go down to Le Mans in '88 with the Seven Club: Guy Mundy, Lol Pilfold, Barry Sweeney, David Mirylees etc. Photo and mention in Classic and Sports Car at the time. Spec now includes Arch renovated
chassis with additional tubes for radius arm pickup, also gearbox
mount, engine bay etc. Elan triangular vent wheels with 13x 145
tyres Standard 8/10 axle with strengthening plate and 4.11 diff,
1380 with Steve Harris head about 10.1, 2X HS6, 276 with 1.5
rockers, belt drive, maniflow lcb and recently was measured at
about 85bhp at the wheels (suggested 105 at flywheel). In many
ways she is similar to Brian Soper's S2, but with 'gull wings'
and alloy/ red in colour. We used her as our wedding car in 1988
and has been on the road ever since, so is looking a bit tatty
now because I believe in using her through the winter - often
the best time on a crisp morning in West Dorset (without the
trippers and the harvesting tractors). So I'm now thinking of
taking her off the road this winter to tidy her up a bit! |
