It was one of three identically
configured, right-hand drive cars delivered to the Ecurie Shirlee
Company - the Manhattan Importer/Distributor. Being right-hand
drive, SB1824 was quite
possibly a race car from the beginning.
The previous owner, Ben Lloyd
(Thousand Oaks, CA) purchased the car in 1986 as little more
than a decent chassis. Working with Tony Griffiths, Ben restored
SB1824 over a three year period from 1986-1989. His goal was
to duplicate a racing Super 7 as seen in the 60's. In 1989 it
won Best in Show Race car at the West Lake Auto Show, Los
Angeles. From 1989-1995 Ben raced SB1824 on the west coast at
Willow Springs and Palm Springs raceways.
I purchased the car from Ben
in 1997 and brought it to Texas to race with the CVAR vintage
race club. I have thoroughly enjoyed racing it ever since. While
these cars are fun to drive on the street, they really come into
their element on the track. A Seven can run lap times that absolutely
embarrass big-bore cars!
