1963 Series 2, SB 1721

Paul of UK Sports Cars, described the car in August of 2000:

The car was fully restored on a replacement chassis in 1993 by Arch Motors (official Lotus Seven and Caterham chassis manufacturers). The car has only had 3 owners in 37 years! I can confirm that this Lotus Chassis No. SB1721 left the Delamare Road, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire works on 21st June, 1963. The car was originally BRG and aluminium. The original owner was from Westerham in Kent. The engine is 164bhp at 8,000 rpm! and I have a Dyno readout. Lovely power-band from 5,000 - 8,000rpm. and is a real flyer. Maximum power is at 7,750 rpm. Dry sump lubrication. Twin-plate AP clutch. Forged con-rods. Big valves. I have a complete brakedown on the engine build. MOT certificate for February 2001. Superlite alloys. FIA roll bar.

The car has a limited Slip Differential The wheels are 13" X 6J. Tyres are Avon Turbospeed X 4. Size: 185/60R13 all round. No defects to report.

The transmission is a straight-cut 4 speed gearbox. The engine has done 3,000 miles since the rebuild. The rear axle ratio is 3.9:1 There is no top, but there is a seperate aluminium window frame for the aeroscreen. I took the car out for a short run last week and it really is a joy to drive. The engine & gearbox are superb!

John Watson said of the car:

"I have some pictures of your car but none with the nose off. As far as I can ascertain there are several Caterham bits on the car; the wings both front and rear, the rear lights and the peddlebox cover being some of these. Strictly speaking Series Two cars never left the factory with T/C engines or revolution alloy wheels either. The rollbar is also a special.

"Having said all the above you have a car with correct CHASSIS # and FRAME # and what maybe original ROAD REGISTRATION NO. I know of at least three previous owners of the car, so it seems to have a proper history which is more than can be said about half of the cars I deal with."

The Momo steering wheel once belonged to Lotus Formula One driver Satoya Nakajima.

The car runs perfectly. Just had a new head gasket and complete engine and chassis service by Loynings Engine Service.

August 2000 report (from previous owner):

I picked up my new 7 in Tacoma this week. The car was from UK Sports Cars in Kent.

I have put a whole 3 miles on the car, but I look forward to running it today--weather permitting. It is running a Lotus twin-cam 1600 that puts out 165 hp. It is a rocket. Best of all it is sweeter than any thing I have ever driven. My last Super Seven was a Donkorvoort running an RS 2000 that was supposed to have 160 hp. The Series II is much faster.
